Hire Crane is an introduction service. We do not hire out cranes or plan lifts, and we never sell your details to marketing lists.

What does tower crane hire involve?

Tower crane hire is a project, not a single lift: the crane is designed for the site, erected, operated for weeks or months, then dismantled.

That usually means a base or foundation designed for the crane, a mobile crane to erect and dismantle it, a trained operator for the length of the hire, and regular thorough examination of the crane while it is on site. The two common kinds are flat-top or hammerhead cranes with a horizontal jib, and luffing jib cranes, whose jib raises and lowers and so suits tight city sites.

Things to sort out early

  • Oversailing: if the jib will swing over neighbouring property, you will normally need the owners' agreement.
  • Aviation: near an airport, the aerodrome may need to be told, and tall cranes may need lighting.
  • Foundations and ground: the base is designed for the crane and the ground, which takes time.
  • Power and access: a supply for the crane, and room for the vehicles that deliver and erect it.

Who plans the lifts?

Under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER), every lifting operation has to be properly planned by a competent person, appropriately supervised and carried out safely. BS 7121, the British Standard code of practice for the safe use of cranes, sets out how that is usually done. BS 7121 has a part specific to tower cranes. On most building projects the lifting operations are managed by the contractor's appointed person, with the crane supplied with an operator. Contract lift or crane hire: the difference.

What to have ready

  • The site address and an outline of the project and its length.
  • The heaviest loads and where they need to go, which decide the jib length and capacity.
  • Any drawings or a site plan showing where the crane could stand.
  • Start date, and whether the crane is needed for the whole project or one phase.

Questions people ask

How long can you hire a tower crane for?

Tower cranes are normally hired for the length of a project or phase, typically weeks or months, because erecting and dismantling one is a job in itself.

Do I need permission for a tower crane?

It depends on the site. The jib swinging over neighbouring property normally needs the owners' agreement, and a site near an airport may need to notify the aerodrome. The hire firm and your designers can advise on what applies.

Does a tower crane come with an operator?

Usually, yes. Tower cranes are normally supplied with a trained operator for the length of the hire.
