What to have ready
Crane hire firms can quote faster and more accurately with these details.
- The site address and postcode, and where the crane could stand.
- What is being lifted: its weight if you know it, its size, and whether it has lifting points.
- How far and how high: the distance from where the crane stands to where the load lands (the radius), and the height it has to clear.
- Access: gateway and door widths, overhead cables, trees, and whether the crane needs to set up on a road or pavement.
- Ground conditions: soft ground, cellars, drains and recent backfill all matter, because outriggers put a lot of load through a small area.
- Dates, and whether you want a contract lift or crane hire with operator.
Questions people ask
Is Hire Crane a crane hire company?
No. Hire Crane is an introduction service run by Domain Farm Ltd. We do not own cranes, employ operators, or plan, supervise or carry out lifts. We pass your request to crane hire firms that cover your area, and they contact you directly.
How much does crane hire cost?
We do not publish prices, because there is no fair average to quote. Price depends on the size of crane, how long it is needed, travel to site, the operator's hours, any permits or traffic management, and whether the job is a contract lift. Crane hire firms quote for the specific job.
What is the difference between a contract lift and crane hire?
On a contract lift the crane hire company plans and manages the lift for you. On crane hire with operator, often called CPA hire, the crane and operator come to you but you are responsible for planning and supervising the lift. Read the full explanation.
Do I need a lift plan?
Under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER), every lifting operation has to be properly planned by a competent person, appropriately supervised and carried out safely. BS 7121, the British Standard code of practice for the safe use of cranes, sets out how that is usually done. On a contract lift the crane hire company takes this on. On crane hire with operator it falls to you.
Which crane do I need?
It depends on the weight, how far it has to travel from where the crane stands, the height and the access. As a rough guide: a HIAB for delivering and placing materials, a mini or spider crane for tight access and indoor work, a mobile crane for heavier or longer reach lifts, and a tower crane for building projects that run for months. If you are not sure, choose that option on the form and the hire firm can advise.
